Q I'M 27 years old and I'm really keen about working with cars. I wouldn't mind a job as a tyre fitter, but do I need much training?

A YOU can get a job as a tyre fitter without formally completing studies. Training can be provided on the job.

There are also related courses such as the Certificate II in Automotive Mechanical (Light Tyre Fitting).

As long as there are cars there will be a need for someone to fit and repair tyres.

Go and introduce yourself to the managers of a few tyre-fitting centres (taking your resume with you) and see what leads they may be able to give you.

Your interest in cars will certainly be to your advantage, along with you displaying a keenness to learn more through a good workplace.

You might also like to find out more about working in this field, and related courses, through Automotive Training Victoria, atv.org.au; Automotive Training Australia, automotivetraining.org.au; and the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, vacc.com.au.

QIS there anywhere I can go to get some general information about careers?

AONE very handy place to contact is the Centrelink Career Information Centre (CIC).

These centres have been around for years and are a great source of career information.

The Melbourne CIC is at 617 Victoria St, Abbotsford (Phone: 1800048525)
